Kalamandalam V. Satyabhama (1937–2015) was an acclaimed Indian classical dancer, choreographer, and educator, widely recognized as a pioneering figure and matriarch of Mohiniyattam, the graceful dance form from Kerala. Born on November 4, 1937, in Shornur, Palakkad district, Kerala, she began her dance training at the age of 12 (1949) at Kerala Kalamandalam. Initially, she focused on Bharatanatyam under gurus Kalamandalam Achutha Warrier and Kalamandalam Krishnankutty Warrier. She later dedicated herself to Mohiniyattam under the guidance of Thottassery Chinnammu Amma, who revived the Mohiniyattam course in 1950. Satyabhama also received some training in Kathakali and had a stint with Kalamandalam Kalyanikutty Amma. Her career at Kerala Kalamandalam began in 1957 as a teacher. She rose through the ranks to become the institution's first female Vice-Principal in 1991 and subsequently served as Principal from 1992 to 1993 before her retirement in 1992. Satyabhama played a pivotal role in revitalizing Mohiniyattam, developing its training methods, and establishing it as a distinct classical style. She innovated by integrating elements from Bharatanatyam, Kathakali (such as torso sways and bustles), and Kaikottikali, while also resequencing performances to intersperse expressive acting (abhinaya) with movement sequences (adavus). She also refined Mohiniyattam's costumes and jewelry. A prolific choreographer, she created numerous original compositions, including 11 padams, 4 varnams, and several thillanas and group pieces. Her debut on a major stage was in 1955 during Kalamandalam's silver jubilee, performing before Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. She also toured internationally, performing in Singapore and Malaysia. Satyabhama authored a significant treatise on Mohiniyattam in Malayalam, titled "Mohiniyattam – History, Techniques and Performance," which includes 35 of her compositions. She passed away on September 13, 2015, in Ottapalam, Palakkad.
