Anusha Subramanyam is a highly regarded Bharatanatyam dancer, choreographer, teacher, and dance movement therapist. She is an alumna of Kalakshetra College of Fine Arts, graduating with honors in 1986. Following her studies at Kalakshetra, she further trained under Leela Samson in Delhi. In 1994, she was awarded the Dr. PN Berry and Chevening Scholarships to pursue Dance Movement Therapy in the UK, graduating from the University of Hertfordshire in 1996. She has also trained as a Pilates teacher. Subramanyam is recognized as one of the most exciting exponents of Bharatanatyam, known for her work both within and outside its traditional framework. Her practice is trans-cultural and inter-generational, focusing on integrating dance, education, somatic, and contemplative practices. She has performed and taught internationally and is based in the UK, though she divides her time between London and Chennai. She is the director of Beeja, an organization she founded to generate new ideas and creative forms through performances, workshops, and classes, making Bharatanatyam accessible to wider audiences. Anusha Subramanyam has worked extensively with diverse groups, including children with special needs, individuals with autism, mental and physical disabilities, and the elderly, utilizing dance as a therapeutic and empowering tool. She served as the subject leader for Bharatanatyam at the Centre for Advanced Training (CAT) in Birmingham and was part of the core team that developed the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) Bharatanatyam syllabus, with a focus on safe dance practice. In 2011, she received the Asian Women Achievement Award in Culture. She has been an inspiring teacher for over two decades, championing South Asian and inclusive dance practices.
