Meaning
Salangai in Tamil, ghungroo in the north, gejje in Kannada — leather straps or cords carrying rows of small metal bells, tied at the ankles so that every strike of the foot sounds. They make the dancer a percussionist as well, and are treated with reverence: they are touched to the eyes before wearing and never stepped over.
