Acharya Parvati Kumar (1921-2012) was a highly influential Indian classical dancer, choreographer, scholar, and Bharatanatyam guru, celebrated for his profound contributions to the art form. Born on February 27, 1921, he received extensive training in multiple classical dance styles, including Bharatanatyam under Guru Chandrashekhar Pillai, Guru Mahalingam Pillai, and Smt. Maylapur Gauri Amma. He also studied Kathakali with Guru Karunakar Panikar and Kathak with Guru Ratikant Arya and Guru Sunder Prasad. A Sanskrit scholar, Kumar possessed deep knowledge of foundational texts such as Bharata's Natya Shastra and Nandikesvara's Abhinaya Darpana, which underpinned his rigorous teaching methodology and creative works. His career as a choreographer began early, working with the Indian National Theatre in Bombay from 1947 to 1965, during which he choreographed over twenty dance-dramas, including acclaimed productions like "Rhythm of Culture" and "Discovery of India". He also created numerous dance-dramas for children, such as "Panchatantra" and "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs". Between 1950 and 1968, he choreographed dance sequences for several Hindi and regional films. In 1968, Acharya Parvati Kumar founded the Tanjavur Nritya Shala in Mumbai, an institution dedicated to training students in the traditional Tanjore style of Bharatanatyam. Here, he emphasized perfection in fundamental adavus and a scholarly approach that integrated theoretical knowledge with practical training. His significant research into the Marathi Nirupanas (compositions) of the Tanjavur Maratha rulers, like Shahaji and Sambaji, culminated in the publication of his book "Tanjavur Nritya Prabandha" in 1982, and he subsequently choreographed these works for performance. Acharya Parvati Kumar's dedication was recognized with numerous accolades, including the Maharashtra State Award (1969), the F.I.E. Foundation Awards (1979), and the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Choreography (1981). He was also conferred the title of 'Nritya Maharshi'. His teaching legacy is carried forward by prominent disciples such as Sucheta Bhide Chapekar, Dr. Sandhya Purecha, and Guru Kirti Naik. Acharya Parvati Kumar passed away on November 29, 2012, leaving an indelible mark on Indian classical dance.
