Akila P began her dance journey as a student of Bharatanatyam, receiving training under the tutelage of the late Thanjai Thiru Kittappa Pillai and Ms. Vidya Narayanan, who is a senior disciple of Thanjai Thiru Kittappa Pillai. She has a strong academic background, having completed her M.A. and M.Phil in Indian Music from the University of Madras. Akila P has an extensive performance career in classical solo Bharatanatyam, spanning over 15 years. Her notable solo performances include appearances at Natyanjali Chidambaram for ten years, Parthasarathy Swami Sabha in 1999 and 2009, Karaikal SaptaswaraIsai Peravai in 2000, and Chennai Tamil Isai Sangam in 2003. In addition to her classical work, Akila P expanded her artistic scope by joining the Padmini Chettur Dance Company in 2005. With the company, she performed in contemporary dance productions such as "Pushed" (2006), "Paper doll, The Beautiful thing1" (2009), and "Wall Dancing" (2012), which toured various contemporary dance festivals across Europe and Korea. As an independent artist in Indian contemporary dance, she has also choreographed several short dances, including "Unstill images" (2011), "Counter" (2012), "Udalmozhi" (2014), and "Theenda Theenda" (2015). Beyond dance, Akila P is also a regular practitioner and teacher of Carnatic vocal music and Yoga.
