Alaknanda Devi was a significant Kathak exponent and an early figure in Indian classical dance, deeply rooted in the traditions of the Benaras Gharana. She was the eldest of five children born to Pandit Sukhdev Maharaj, a revered figure credited with playing a crucial role in elevating the status of Kathak. Sukhdev Maharaj is recognized as a pioneer who worked to re-establish Kathak's respectability within society by introducing devotional "kavits" (verses) dedicated to deities like Krishna, Radha, Kali, Hanuman, and Shiva into performances. Alaknanda Devi, along with her siblings, received comprehensive training in music, dance, and percussion directly from her father, who possessed extensive knowledge of these arts and authored literature used in their performances. Her artistic journey extended beyond classical dance into the realm of early Indian cinema, where she also acted in silent films. After establishing herself, Alaknanda Devi relocated from Bombay (Mumbai) to Calcutta (Kolkata), where she made her permanent residence and continued to contribute to the arts. She was highly regarded for her complete command over her craft, demonstrating exceptional proficiency in both singing and dancing, which allowed her to orchestrate her performances with full artistic control. An admirable aspect of her character was her commitment to supporting fellow artists; she often made efforts to include unemployed musicians in her programs, ensuring they had opportunities to showcase their talent. Alaknanda Devi maintained strong connections within the Kathak community. Her family home was a hub for prominent dancers, with her father, Pandit Sukhdev Maharaj, her nephew, Gopi Krishna, and the legendary Pandit Birju Maharaj frequently visiting the Calcutta residence of her student, Ravi Jain. In a testament to her lifelong dedication and enduring artistry, Alaknanda Devi delivered a memorable performance of her favorite "dadra" at a Kala Kunj program in 1982, at the remarkable age of 82. This performance showcased her continued vitality and ability to captivate audiences, proving her timeless skill. Her legacy is intricately woven with her family's profound contributions to popularizing Kathak and her own multifaceted career as a performer and silent film actress.
