Aneesha Grover is a New Delhi-based Bharatanatyam dancer, choreographer, and teacher, recognized for her innovative approach to classical Indian dance. She began her Bharatanatyam training in 1996 at the age of seven, under the tutelage of veteran dancer Jyotsna Shourie, with whom she has maintained a guru-shishya relationship for over 25 years. Grover commenced her international performing career at the age of eight. Her artistic journey is marked by a dynamic creative trajectory that includes producing, writing, and choreographing for the Jyotsna Shourie Dance Company's productions. In 2024, Grover co-founded the Keelaka Dance Company with her guru, Jyotsna Shourie, a contemporary dance and theatre space in New Delhi dedicated to fostering a dialogue between Indian classical forms and Western idioms like jazz and hip-hop. Keelaka Dance Company aims to empower dancers and create immersive narratives using film and technology. Grover is known for her experimental works that reimagine mythology and classical narratives through a modern lens. Her productions often blend Bharatanatyam with other art forms, theatrical elements, and technology, as seen in "Kalatra: The Eternal Consort," which incorporates beat-boxing, and "Echoes of Time," an immersive experience featuring Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi, music, theatre, and film. She also explores feminist undertones in Indian classical texts. Grover's work emphasizes both technical precision in Bharatanatyam and the exploration of an individual artistic voice, aiming to keep the classical art form relevant to contemporary audiences without compromising its essence.
