Anila Kumari

Anila Kumari is an acclaimed Kuchipudi dancer, scholar, and educator, born in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1969. She began her dance training at a very young age, belonging to the artistic lineage of her mother and teacher, Nilimma Devi. Her illustrious Kuchipudi gurus include Prahlad Vedantam Sarma, Jaganath Vedantam Sarma, and Dr. Nataraja Ramakrishna. Kumari also honed her abhinaya technique with renowned artists Priyadarshini Govind and Padmabhushan Kalanidhi Narayanan. Kumari has performed on international stages in Hyderabad and New Delhi in India, Nairobi, Kenya, and Iran, as well as across the United States. The Washington Post has lauded her performances as "A feast for the eyes" and "hauntingly beautiful," while the Hindu Times (India) described her as "gifted with rare charisma and technical virtuosity." She studied Cultural Anthropology at the University of Maryland, where she published a thesis on dance and culture within multiracial immigrant communities. Since 1988, Kumari has been teaching at the Sutradhar Institute of Dance and Related Arts, an organization she helped establish, and currently serves as its Associate Director. She has innovated numerous courses, including the Lotus Buds program, Visual Art and Storytelling, and Creative Writing, and developed a mindfulness dance program for inner-city youth in 1989. An accomplished dramatist and storyteller, she translates Sanskrit poetry into English, making Indian Classical Dance accessible to a wider audience. Her choreographic work often explores metaphors and seeks cross-cultural connectivity, including collaborations between traditional Indian arts and African American gospel traditions. In 2021, she co-created and hosted a virtual storytelling event for Diwali with the Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian, featuring a Kuchipudi performance with Riya Devi-Ashby. She also organized "Pandemic Hues," a virtual gallery for artistic expression during the pandemic, and initiated "Youth Leadership Across an Ocean" to connect students globally.
