K.S.R. Anirudha is a distinguished Indian classical musician and artist, primarily recognized for his mastery of the mridangam and his significant contributions to Bharatanatyam productions. Born to the renowned Bharatanatyam exponent Professor Sudharani Raghupathy, Anirudha displayed a keen interest in rhythm and percussion from the tender age of three. His initial training in rhythmic instruments was under S.S.R. Krishnan and M. Balachander, followed by intense practice in the basics under M.S. Murali. He further honed his technique under the tutelage of the legendary mridangam maestro Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman. A left-handed mridangist, Anirudha is also proficient in playing other skin instruments like the Udukkai and Ganjira. His percussive skills are highly acclaimed, and he is known for the unique ability to wield three mridangams simultaneously, a rarity in the field. He regularly provides mridangam accompaniment for solo and group performances of Shree Bharatalaya, the institution led by his mother, and has also accompanied other prominent artists such as Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam, Prof. Chitra Visweswaran, Smt. Sonal Mansingh, and Kalaimamani Anita Ratnam. Beyond his role as an accompanist, Anirudha is a creative force in dance productions. He has composed jathis for dance and provided rhythmic soundscapes and lyrics for several of Anita Ratnam's productions. In a notable endeavor, he conceived, directed, and performed in "Spatika - Beyond Doubt & Illusion." This production innovatively blended classical Bharatanatyam movements with elements of tai-chi, kalari, and yoga, featuring a collective of Chennai-based classical dancers. Anirudha's contributions to the arts have been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the Yuva Kala Bharathi from Bharat Kalachar in 1998, the Kalaimamani award from the Government of Tamil Nadu in 2003, and the Sangeet Natak Akademi's Yuva Puraskar Award in 2007. Demonstrating a diverse intellectual pursuit, he also holds a Master's Degree in Law from the University of Madras and is an advocate of the Madras High Court. His multifaceted talent and dedication have established him as a significant figure in Indian classical arts.
