Aniruddha Knight (born November 13, 1980) is a renowned artist of Indian classical dance and music, specifically Bharatanatyam. He is a ninth-generation descendant of a distinguished family of dancers and musicians from southern India, tracing a 200-year-old (or 275-year-old) artistic lineage rooted in the Thanjavur and Travancore courts. Unusually, Knight is the first male in his family's history to carry forward this dance tradition, which was traditionally performed by women. His grandmother, the legendary T. Balasaraswati (1918–1984), was celebrated as "the greatest Indian dancer of all time" by Newsweek. Born in Madras (now Chennai) to Lakshmi Knight (Balasaraswati's daughter) and Douglas Knight Jr., an American percussionist, Aniruddha Knight's early life was immersed in the arts. He received his initial formal Bharatanatyam training from his mother, Lakshmi Knight, starting at age six, and was initiated into the family's distinctive style by Balasaraswati herself, learning basic mudras through playful games. He further honed his Bharatanatyam technique under Shyamala Mohan, a prominent disciple of T. Balasaraswati, and advanced his Carnatic music proficiency with his uncles, T. Muktha and T. Viswanathan. Knight's professional career commenced with his debut performance at the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival in 1997. His performances are noted for crisp adavus (dance steps) and a "no-frills" approach, emphasizing musicality and improvisation in abhinaya, consistent with Balasaraswati's style. He divides his time between India and the United States.
