🪔 About
Anita Babu is an internationally experienced Odissi dancer, educator, and choreographer, recognized for her work bridging classical Indian dance with contemporary social inquiry and cultural diplomacy. With over three decades of performance experience and more than fifteen years of teaching, she approaches Odissi as both a traditional discipline and a universal movement language. Babu began her Odissi training at the age of seven in school, later becoming a disciple of the late Padmashree Guru Gangadhar Pradhan at the Orissa Dance Academy (Bhubaneswar). She has also refined her skills under the mentorship of Padmashree Aruna Mohanty and Bichitrananda Swain. Babu is a Doordarshan artiste since 1991 and has been empanelled with the ICCR's Reference Panel of Artistes since 1994. She is also empanelled by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, for Festivals of India abroad. Her international engagements include performances, workshops, and lecture-demonstrations across the USA, Africa, Southeast Asia, and Europe. Notably, she undertook an extensive ICCR tour of the United States in 2003, delivering over 17 performances and 5 lecture-demonstrations. She has performed at various festivals, including the Konark Dance Festival, Puri Beach Festival, and Pallavostava. Anita Babu holds a Master of Arts degree in Anthropology from Utkal University. In 1999, Anita Babu founded Odissi Natya Sala in New Delhi, an institution dedicated to training, creation, and outreach through Odissi dance. The academy, co-founded by her guru, Late Guru Gangadhar Pradhan, is affiliated with Pracheen Kala Kendra, Chandigarh, and is empanelled with ICCR for teaching foreign students. Her teaching philosophy, "Dance to Express, Not to Impress," emphasizes inner growth, mindfulness, and the Guru-Shishya tradition. She also choreographs on contemporary social issues such as water conservation, human trafficking, and menstrual taboos.
