Annette Leday is a French dancer, choreographer, and director celebrated for her distinctive approach to intercultural contemporary creation, deeply rooted in the dance and theatre traditions of India and France. Her profound engagement with Indian classical dance commenced in 1978 when she embarked on a journey to India to immerse herself in Kathakali dance-theatre in Kerala. Supported by scholarships from the ICCR Indian Government and the French Ministry of Culture, she underwent rigorous training at esteemed institutions such as Sadanam and Kalamandalam, under the guidance of grand masters Keezhpadam Kumaran Nair and Padmanabhan Nair. Earlier in the mid-1970s, Leday also briefly studied Bharatanatyam with M.K. Saroja. Her comprehensive artistic background includes training as an actress in France and graduating from the Institut des Langues Orientales in Paris, where she achieved fluency in Malayalam. Since 1989, Leday has been at the forefront of directing and choreographing performances that feature both Indian and Western dancers, actors, and musicians, fostering a continuous dialogue between these diverse artistic cultures. She established the Annette Leday/Keli Company, an organization dedicated to evolving traditional performance techniques into contemporary creations. Her innovative choreography has given rise to a new artistic vocabulary, where various techniques mutually enrich each other. The company's acclaimed productions include "Kathakali-King Lear" (premiered in 1989 and revived in 2018/2019), "La Sensitive" (1992), "Trans-Malabar" (1995), "Cinderella Otherwise" (1997), "The Tempest" (2000), "The Stuff of Dreams" (2002), "Big-bang.org" (2005), and "Mithuna". These works have garnered international recognition, with performances at prestigious venues like the Globe Theatre in London. Annette Leday's significant contributions have been acknowledged with several accolades, including the Aide à l'Écriture from la Beaumarchais in 1992, the Prix Médicis Hors les Murs from the Ministry of External Affairs in 1993, and another Aide à l'Écriture from the Ministry of Culture in 2003. Beyond her work as a performer and choreographer, Leday is also a dedicated researcher and author. She penned the bilingual book "Contemporary Dance in India Today" (2022), a comprehensive survey of India's contemporary dance landscape, based on extensive research and interviews with prominent dancers. She has also produced a film exploring contemporary dance in India. Her artistic endeavors consistently bridge traditional Indian performing arts with contemporary global perspectives.
