Anuradha Naimpally is a distinguished Bharatanatyam dancer, choreographer, and educator, recognized for her unique ability to bridge ancient Indian classical dance with contemporary cultural and artistic traditions. Raised in a small Northern Canadian town by art-loving Indian immigrant parents, she was exposed to various arts from a young age, initially studying ballet, jazz, and tap. At thirteen, she began her intensive training in Bharatanatyam under Menaka Thakkar in Toronto. Her dedication led her to move to India for four years, where she pursued professional studies with master Pt VJ Pillai, his wife Jayshree Pillai, and their guru, Acharya Parvati Kumar. Naimpally holds an Honors BA in Philosophy and a Master of Fine Arts in Dance Ethnology, combining her artistic prowess with scholarly depth. In 1989, after receiving the prestigious Jacqueline LeMieux Prize from the Canada Council, she relocated to Austin, Texas. There, she quickly established herself as a performer and educator, founding Austin Dance India (ADI) in 1991. For over 35 years, Naimpally has performed worldwide, connecting with diverse audiences through engaging explanations and moving performances. Austin Dance India, under her artistic direction, has served as a hub for Bharatanatyam study, practice, and performance, guiding generations of students. While the school is no longer accepting new students, ADI now focuses on arts-in-education initiatives, workshops, community events, and professional productions. Anuradha Naimpally is passionate about social practice projects, using dance to address critical issues such as racial inequity, climate change, girls' empowerment, social justice, human displacement, gender, and sexuality. She has also taught academic classes at the University of Texas at Austin and Austin Community College. Her contributions to the dance field were recognized with her induction into the Austin Arts Hall of Fame in 2018.
