Arayambath Janardhanan, born on April 25, 1942, in Kerala, India, is a distinguished exponent of Indian classical dance, specializing in both Kathakali and Bharatanatyam. His foundational training in Kathakali was imparted by his father, Guru T. K. Chandu Panicker, who adhered to the Kallarikoda tradition of North Kerala. He further refined his Kathakali artistry under the tutelage of the renowned Guru Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair, supported by a two-year Government of India scholarship. Janardhanan's extensive association with the Kalakshetra Foundation in Chennai began in 1958, where he also received comprehensive training in Bharatanatyam from the legendary Rukmini Devi Arundale. After successfully completing his Post Diploma in Kathakali with distinction in 1966, Janardhanan dedicated 47 uninterrupted years to Kalakshetra. During his tenure, he was a principal dancer in numerous Kalakshetra productions, many of which were directed by Rukmini Devi herself. He also served as a dedicated faculty member, imparting his knowledge of Kathakali and Bharatanatyam. From June 2001 to May 2003, he held the significant position of Principal of the Rukmini College of Fine Arts, an integral part of Kalakshetra. He retired from Kalakshetra as Professor Emeritus at the age of 62 and continues to hold this esteemed title. As a performer, Janardhanan essayed nearly all the major lead roles within the Kalakshetra repertoire, including prominent characters such as Lakshmana and Rama in the Ramayana, Buddha in Buddha Avataram, and Bheema in Damayanti Swayamvaram. His critically acclaimed performances also extended to productions like Bhakta Jayadeva and Tagore's Shyama. Beyond his stage career, he has conducted numerous lecture-demonstrations and served as an external examiner for dance at various universities and art centers both in India and internationally. His global performances with the Kalakshetra troupe have taken him to countries across Australia, Europe, Asia, and the USA. Janardhanan's profound contributions to Indian classical dance have been recognized with several prestigious accolades. These include the Pravasi Kalasree Award from the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi in 2012, the Acharya Choodamani from Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, Chennai, in 2013, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2014, and the Natya Kalanidhi from the Association of Bharatanatyam Dancers of India in 2021.
