Kalaimamani Dr. O.S. Arun is a highly acclaimed Carnatic vocalist, born into a family deeply rooted in music, inheriting his initial lessons from his father, Vidwan O.V. Subramaniam. He has garnered global recognition for his exceptional musical prowess, profound knowledge of the art, and skillful integration of these elements. With a career spanning over four decades, Arun has extensively practiced various forms of vocal music, receiving generous tutelage from esteemed figures in the industry. He holds a Masters Degree in Carnatic music and a Sangeet Shiromani Diploma, having also achieved Alankar Purna from Gandharva Mahavidyalaya and topping the Sangeetha Shironmani diploma course at Delhi University's Faculty of Music and Fine Arts. Arun is celebrated for his mellifluous voice and captivating stage presence, which bring a fresh perspective to the art form. His performances are often immersive musical interactions, characterized by an unparalleled emphasis on 'Bhava' (deep-rooted emotion), making his music highly compatible with various dance forms. At the age of 18, he began singing for dance, quickly becoming a sought-after vocalist for Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Kathak, and occasionally Odissi productions. He has collaborated with numerous senior dancers, including Sonal Mansingh, Yamini Krishnamurthy, Birju Maharaj, and Leela Samson. Beyond his performing career, O.S. Arun is dedicated to the propagation of fine arts. In 1998, he established the Alapana Foundation (also known as Alapana Trust), with a primary focus on fostering intercultural artistic synthesis, promoting music education, and exploring music's therapeutic and community-service roles. Through this foundation, he actively nurtures young talents in authentic South Indian Carnatic music. Arun's extensive discography includes numerous albums of Bhajans, Carnatic music, Fusion Music, and Devotional Music, and he has also contributed his voice to commercial films. He has composed music for various private recordings, video films, documentaries, and ballet productions, further solidifying his indelible imprint on the field of Indian classical music.
