🪔 About
Asha Jeevan Sathyan is a versatile Indian classical dancer, singer, and academic, known for her proficiency in Kathakali and several other classical dance forms. The granddaughter of the late Malayalam actor Sathyan, she has carved her own identity in the performing arts. Asha began her journey in classical dance at a young age, mastering Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Mohiniyattam, Keralanadanam, Kathak, and Ottan Thullal. Her passion for Kathakali, which she started in Class VIII, became a significant focus of her artistic career. She made her Kathakali debut in 1998 at a school youth festival. Her Kathakali training was under the tutelage of experienced artistes such as Nelliyode Vasudevan Namboodiri and Nelliyode Vishnu Namboodiri. For Kathak, she was mentored by Rajendra Gangani, and for Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam, Kuchipudi, and Keralanadanam, her guru was Regatta Girija. Asha holds a diploma in Bharatanatyam from Chennai and has pursued higher education in music, earning her graduation and post-graduation from the Department of Music of Kerala University. She is currently pursuing a PhD in music, focusing on the 'padas' (lyrics/verses) of the character Panchali in Kathakali. She also holds an MBA in HR from Pondicherry. Throughout her career, Asha Jeevan Sathyan has performed at various school and college youth festivals, events organized by Regatta Natya Sangeetha Kendra, and light and sound shows by Soorya Krishnamoorthy. She has portrayed prominent female Kathakali roles such as Sita, Shurpanakha, and Panchali. In 2020, after a four-year hiatus to raise her daughter, she returned to the stage, performing for an online dance festival organized by the Kalanjali School of Arts in Kochi. Beyond performing, Asha serves as the Director of the Academy of Music under the Sathyan Foundation and is also the Vice Chairperson of the Sathyan Foundation. She has also worked as an Assistant Professor at Government College for Women, Thiruvananthapuram, and as an announcer at All India Radio.
