Asha Sharath, born Asha Madhu, is a highly acclaimed Indian classical dancer and actress, whose profound journey in dance commenced at the tender age of three. She was initiated into the art form by her legendary mother, Kalamandalam Sumathy, who herself was a renowned dancer and recipient of prestigious awards. Asha's foundational training in Bharatanatyam and Mohiniyattom was meticulously guided by her mother and uncle Ravikumar. Demonstrating a remarkable versatility, she further expanded her artistic horizons by learning Kuchipudi from Guru Vinayachandran Master and Anitha Janaki Teacher, and delving into Kathakali under the tutelage of the late Darpana Govindan Namboothiri, Kalanilayam Madhu, and RLV Radhakrishnan. Her exceptional talent was formally recognized in 1992 when she was honored as the Best Dancer of the Year at the All India University Level. In 1995, following her marriage to T V Sharath, Asha relocated to Dubai, a move that marked a new chapter in her artistic and entrepreneurial endeavors. There, in 2003, she realized her long-held dream by establishing Kairali Kalakendram. This esteemed institution, dedicated to the promotion and preservation of Indian Art, Music, and Dance, began modestly with just four students. Today, Kairali Kalakendram has flourished, expanding its reach with multiple branches across the UAE, including locations in Ghusais, Discovery Gardens, Karama, and Sharjah, thereby nurturing and inspiring the next generation of classical dancers in the region. Throughout her illustrious career, Asha Sharath has been the recipient of numerous prestigious accolades, underscoring her significant contributions to Indian classical dance. These include the Swathi Thirunal Award, Akshaya Desiya Award, Kaladarpana Award, and the Mayilpeeli Award bestowed by Guruvayur Devaswom. She was also honored with a Gold Medal for Artistic Excellence from the Maharaja of Banaras, the Kalaratna Swathi Thirunal Award in 2006, the esteemed Kalathilakam title, and the Akshaya Desiya Puraskaram. Despite maintaining a thriving acting career that has brought her widespread recognition, Asha remains deeply committed to her dance, performing regularly and continuing to be a prominent figure in the world of Indian classical arts.
