Ashokbala “Ashoka” Rao, born in Bombay, India, is a distinguished figure in Indian classical dance, primarily known for her expertise in Kathak. She began her journey in Kathak at the age of four, receiving tutelage from legendary masters recognized as torchbearers of Lucknowi Kathak. Rao's training also extended to Bharatanatyam, Manipuri, and Kuchipuddi, which she incorporated to enrich her choreography. As a performer, she has showcased her talent throughout North India, gaining professional experience through classical dance recitals, choreography of original dance-dramas, and "Show Biz" performances in Bombay. Rao moved to Michigan, U.S., with her husband in 1975 and began teaching Indian classical dance in 1989. In 1993, she established Nrityanjali, a school of classical Indian dance in Swartz Creek, Michigan, which was the first Kathak school in the state. Nrityanjali, meaning "offering in service of dance," aims to preserve, promote, and propagate India's classical dance heritage. Ashoka Rao has tirelessly worked to educate the public about Kathak through educational performances and dance-dramas, often featuring up to 75 local dancers and bringing famed Kathak dancers from India to the U.S. Her dedication to the art form has been recognized with numerous accolades, including state and national awards in India, such as first place at the prestigious Sur Singar Sansad-Bombay and the All India Classical Dance Competition. In 2023, she received the Michigan Heritage Award, the state's highest distinction, for her lifelong commitment to preserving and passing on traditional Kathak Dance. On October 14, 2023, Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley proclaimed it "Ashoka Rao Day," and Governor Gretchen Whitmer also issued a special proclamation. Ashoka Rao's teaching legacy is significant, with over 42 certified students capable of teaching Kathak, five of whom have participated in the Michigan Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program with her. Many of her students continue to learn from her even after graduating college. Beyond her dance career, Rao is also active in her community, serving as Development Director at Gloria Coles Flint Public Library and president of the Greater Flint Sunrise Rotary Club.
