Asharani (Ashu) Devgune is an Indian classical dancer, choreographer, and teacher, originally from Pune, Maharashtra, India, a city celebrated for its rich cultural heritage in drama, dance, and music. She currently resides and works in Gent, Belgium. Ashu commenced her dance journey at the tender age of six, receiving her initial training from her mother in India. Her formal education includes a Bachelor of Performing Arts, specializing in Bharatanatyam, from the University of Pune, Maharashtra, India. She further honed her skills through additional training from Prayag Sangeet Samiti in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India, and Nrutya Zankar Sangeet Academy. Ashu Devgune is a recipient of the National Talent Research Scholarship. Her extensive career spans over two decades on stage, during which she has performed as a soloist, choreographer, and ensemble leader across India, Europe, and Africa, accumulating over 2,000 performances. She has also served as a dancer and choreographer for 'Sumit' and 'T-Series' companies in India. Her repertoire encompasses Bharatanatyam, various Indian folk dances from Maharashtra and Rajasthan (such as Lavani, Koli, Ghoomar, and Kalbelia), Bollywood, and semi-classical styles. She is also noted for incorporating Kathak into her performances. In Tanzania, Ashu founded her own dance school, Nupur Nrutyala. Since moving to Belgium in 2017, she has continued to teach and perform, leading her school with a commitment to precision, expression, and respect for tradition. Her contributions to the arts have been recognized by the City of Ghent, where she was promoted as an artist from 2019 to 2025, and she has been featured in the STAR Gent artist list for the past six years. Ashu actively engages in workshops and choreographs numerous dance events in Belgium, Africa, and India, often collaborating with other dance companies.
