Astad Deboo (1947-2020) was a pioneering Indian contemporary dancer and choreographer, celebrated for his unique fusion of Indian classical dance forms with Western modern dance techniques. Born in Navsari, Gujarat, he began his dance journey at age six, learning Kathak from Indra Kumar Mohanty and Prahlad Das in Jamshedpur. Later, in 1977, he delved into Kathakali under Guru E. Krishna Panikar in Kerala. His exposure to Western contemporary dance began in Mumbai, where he was inspired by the Murray Louis Dance Company. He subsequently trained at the Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance in New York, the London School of Contemporary Dance (learning Martha Graham's and José Limón's techniques), and with acclaimed choreographers like Pina Bausch in Germany and Alison Becker Chase of the Pilobolus Dance Company. Deboo developed a distinctive dance theatre style, characterized by abstract, non-narrative movement, manipulation of space, and eclectic music. He was known for his intense facial gestures (mukhabhinaya), hand gestures (mudras), and fluid body movements, including his signature fast-paced twirls. His career spanned over five decades, performing in more than 70 countries and collaborating with diverse artists, including Pink Floyd and Maya Plisetskaya. A strong advocate for social causes, Deboo extensively worked with marginalized communities. In 2002, he founded the Astad Deboo Dance Foundation to provide creative training to the differently-abled and underprivileged. He notably choreographed for and performed with deaf individuals from institutions like the Clarke School for the Deaf in Chennai, The Action Players in Kolkata, and Gallaudet University in Washington D.C. He also mentored street children from the Salaam Baalak Trust. Deboo passed away in Mumbai in December 2020 at the age of 73.
