B.K. Shyam Prakash was a distinguished Indian classical dance figure, primarily renowned for his contributions to Bharatanatyam as a performer, guru, and institution head. Hailing from Bangalore, Karnataka, he received his initial training from his father, the esteemed Guru H.R. Keshava Murthy, who founded the Keshava Nrithya Shala. Shyam Prakash further honed his skills under the tutelage of B.K. Vasantha Lakshmi and V.P. Dhananjayan of Bharata Kalanjali, Chennai. Throughout his career, B.K. Shyam Prakash toured globally, presenting numerous solo and duet Bharatanatyam recitals. He was also an accomplished mridangist, having secured the 2nd rank in the Vidwath examination conducted by the Government of Karnataka. As a dedicated educator, he trained a multitude of students, many of whom successfully completed their arangetrams and established themselves as dancers. He served as the director of Keshava College of Music and Dance, an institution noted as the first in Karnataka to offer a BA Degree in Bharatanatyam and Carnatic classical music. His teaching legacy includes mentoring students like Kamalika Ghosh, who pursued a Bachelor of Arts in Bharatanatyam at his college in 2017. His children, Ashwini S and Raghu Nandan S, also followed in his footsteps as Bharatanatyam artists and teachers. B.K. Shyam Prakash was honored with the prestigious title of "Karnataka Kalashri."
