🪔 About

Baijnath Prasad (1901-1978), widely known by his affectionate moniker Lachhu Maharaj, was a towering figure in Indian classical dance, celebrated for his mastery of the Kathak form, particularly the Lucknow Gharana. Born on October 16, 1901, in Lucknow, India, he hailed from a distinguished lineage of Kathak exponents. His initial training came from his father, Kalka Prasad, a renowned Kathak artist. Following his father's passing, he continued his rigorous apprenticeship for nearly a decade under his illustrious uncle, Bindadin Maharaj, and also received guidance from his elder brother, Achhan Maharaj. Lachhu Maharaj began performing at the tender age of ten, captivating audiences with his delicate expressions, profound sentimentality, disciplined technique, and inherent sensuality. He was lauded for bringing purity to his dances, characterized by graceful footwork and expressive *abhinaya* (mime). While deeply rooted in traditional Kathak, he also pioneered the innovative fusion of classical dance with cinematic storytelling. He spent a significant portion of his career in Bombay (now Mumbai), where he founded his own institution, "Nutan Nritya Niketan." His contributions to the Indian film industry were substantial, serving as a celebrated cinema-dance and music director. He choreographed memorable dance sequences for numerous films, including "Mahal," "Kale Badal," "Tamasha," "Ghar Ki Laaj," "Shikwa," and the iconic "Mughal-e-Azam" and "Pakeezah." Beyond films, he composed several ballets in the Kathak technique, some notably for the dancer Menaka, and created popular dance compositions such as "Bharaliya Kisan," "Gandhi Ki Amar Kahani," and "Madya Nishedh." In recognition of his pre-eminence and singular devotion to Kathak, Baijnath Prasad "Lachhu Maharaj" was honored with the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1957. In 1973, the Uttar Pradesh government appointed him as the founder-director of Kathak Kendra in Lucknow, where he played a crucial role in promoting the structured teaching of the Lucknow Gharana until his passing on July 19, 1978. He was also the president of the Cine Dance Directors Association. Awards & Honours: Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1957).
