Bapuram Bayan Atai, a distinguished and revered figure in the realm of Indian classical dance, was born in 1888 in the village of Bamungaon, located in the state of Assam, India. His artistic journey commenced at a young age when he became a part of the Kamalabari Satra, a renowned Vaishnav monastery. Within this spiritual and cultural institution, he dedicated himself to mastering Sattriya dance and music, disciplines that are intrinsically woven into the fabric of traditional Bhavana theatre. His initial and rigorous training in the intricate techniques of Sattriya dance and music was undertaken under the tutelage of esteemed gurus, Shri Bapuram Ojha and Shri Bhakatram Ojha. A pivotal influence in shaping his artistic and personal development was his Diksha Guru, the late Lakshmi Kanta Goswami, who held the esteemed position of Satradhikar of Kamalabari Satra at that time. This mentorship profoundly molded his personality, transforming him into a performer of exceptional caliber. Bapuram Bayan Atai rose to prominence as one of the foremost exponents of Sattriya dance during his era. He graced countless stages, delivering captivating performances both as a soloist, showcasing his individual mastery, and as a leading character in elaborate dance-dramas. Beyond his illustrious career as a performer, he was widely acclaimed as an exceptional and dedicated teacher. He committed himself to nurturing the next generation of Sattriya dancers, imparting his profound knowledge and artistic legacy to numerous pupils across various leading Satras throughout Assam. His significant and enduring contributions to the preservation and enrichment of Sattriya dance did not go unnoticed. He was an active member of the Assam Sangeet Natak Akademi and received numerous honors and accolades from various cultural bodies within Assam, acknowledging his profound impact. The pinnacle of his recognition came in 1978 when, for his outstanding eminence in the field of dance and his invaluable efforts in its propagation, Shri Bapuram Bayan Atai was conferred with the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Sattriya dance.
