Bharathiar Palkalaikoodam, a prestigious government institution, was established in 1987 in Puducherry, India, with the aim of promoting and preserving South Indian art and culture, including classical dance forms like Bharatanatyam. Registered under the Societies Registration Act, the institution is funded by the Government of Puducherry through the Directorate of Art & Culture. It is affiliated with Pondicherry University and offers Bachelor of Performing Arts (BPA) degrees in Music and Dance (Bharatanatyam and Mohiniattam), as well as Bachelor of Visual Arts (BVA) degrees in Fine Arts. Initially located at Kamban Kalaiarangam, it later moved to a permanent campus in Ariyankuppam, spanning 10 acres. The institution has successfully graduated 20 batches of students, many of whom have secured employment in various educational institutions, become self-employed, or found opportunities in countries like Singapore, South Africa, America, and France. Notably, 21 National Artists have emerged from Puducherry after the establishment of Bharathiar Palkalaikoodam. The institution also offers diploma courses and part-time evening classes, and its students regularly participate in and win prizes at local, regional, and national competitions.
