Swamimalai K. Rajarathnam Pillai (1931-1994) was a highly revered Indian classical dance guru, nattuvanar, and choreographer, primarily known for his profound contributions to the Vazhuvoor style of Bharatanatyam. Born in Swamimalai in 1931, he hailed from the hereditary Isaivellalar community. He began his illustrious career as an assistant to his grandfather, the eminent Padmashree Vazhuvur Ramiah Pillai, and received his training from Guru Thiruvallaputhur Swaminatha Pillai (T.K. Swaminatha Pillai). Rajarathnam Pillai was celebrated for his exceptional musical talent, brisk jathis, elegant nattuvangam, and innovative choreography skills. He was an acclaimed teacher, known for his patience, perseverance, and dedication, customizing his choreography to suit each student's physique and artistic potential. In 1970, he founded his own dance school, Kamala Kala Nilayam, which was later renamed Rajarathnalaya Bharatha Kalai Koodam by his grandfather. Based in Chennai, India, he trained numerous students who went on to become prominent dancers themselves. He passed away in 1994, shortly after a US tour, with his birthday on July 3rd often commemorated by his disciples and family. Awards & Honours: Kalaimamani, Natya Selvam, Sangeetha Kala Sikamani.
