Born on April 14, 1967, in Majuli, Assam, India, Bhaben Borbayan is a renowned Sattriya professional. He began his journey in Sattriya at a tender age, being "offered" to the Uttar Kamalabari Satra at four, a family tradition. He received extensive training in Sattriya from esteemed gurus including Nandiram Borgayan, Tuniram Borgayan, Komal Ch. Borgayan, Maniram Borgayan, Paramanda Borgayan, Adhyapak Cheniram Barbayan (for khol), and Adhyapak Paramananda Barbayan. His dedication was recognized early, as he was bestowed the title of "Borbayan" by the Uttar Kamalabari Sattra at just sixteen years old. Borbayan's career reflects a deep commitment to propagating Sattriya dance. From 1991 to 1997, he served as a dance teacher at Pitambardev Mahavidyalay, Garamur, Majuli, and Tribeni Sangeet Vidyalaya, Kamalabari, Majuli. Since 2000, he has been the leading drama director at Uttar Kamalabari Sattra, skillfully directing and enriching audiences with Sattriya traditions. He played a pivotal role in establishing a training institute in Delhi in 2008, marking the first time regular Sattriya training was offered outside Assam. This initiative expanded his global outreach, leading to performances and workshops in countries like France, Portugal, and Bhutan. Academically accomplished, Borbayan holds a PhD from Rabindra Bharati University, West Bengal. He also obtained his first master's degree in Sattriya dance from Paris-VIII University in 2013 and pursued a doctoral degree from King's College London. He has taught and performed Sattriya at numerous prestigious international universities, including Paris-VIII University, University of Toulouse (France), King's College University of London, Brown University, Drexel University (USA), National Autonomous University of Mexico, Dali University (China), and Dhaka University (Bangladesh). Recognized for his expertise, he has been invited as an expert by government organizations like the Centre for Cultural Resources and Training (CCRT) and Sangeet Natak Akademi for Gayan Bayan workshops. He is also a dancer, choreographer, drummer, teacher, and artistic director, having directed over 10 Bhaonas on national platforms. In recognition of his significant contributions to Sattriya dance, Bhaben Borbayan received the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for the year 2023.
