Bharati Gupta was a renowned Indian classical Kathak dancer. She began her training at the age of ten under the tutelage of the doyen Shambhu Maharaj, and later continued her studies with his nephew, the legendary Pandit Birju Maharaj. Her rigorous training instilled in her the virtuosity of both the Lucknow and Jaipur Gharanas of Kathak. Gupta emerged as a principal performer in Kathak dance dramas choreographed and directed by Birju Maharaj, often performing as the central danseuse alongside him. She was particularly noted for her mimetic art (abhinaya), a skill honed under Shambhu Maharaj. Her performances, including avant-garde productions like “Roopmati Bazbahadur,” were characterized by her unique ability to command the stage with her petite form through imaginative and well-balanced body extensions, epitomizing the Lucknow style's grace (adaa and nazaakat). Beyond her performing career, Bharati Gupta was a dedicated educator. She served as a faculty member at the Kathak Kendra, the National Centre for Kathak Dance in New Delhi, where she also imparted principles of stage craft. After her retirement from Kathak Kendra, she relocated to Agra. In her later years, she taught Kathak in Mumbai, served as an examiner for Gandharva Sangeet Vidyalaya, worked as a freelance journalist, and engaged in research on Kathak, demonstrating a commitment to innovation and experimentation. Academically accomplished, Bharati Gupta held an M.A. in political science and a B.Ed. She was also a national-level swimmer and earned a Sangitacharya from Prayag Sangeet Samiti for her thesis on spirituality in Kathak. She performed extensively both in India and internationally. Bharati Gupta was honored with a Gold medal at the Design Expo in Nagoya, Japan. She received the Shringarmani award in Mumbai in 1992 and the Pragyan Samman in Delhi in 1994.
