🪔 About
Bhuvana Venkatesh is a prominent Bharatanatyam dancer, choreographer, and teacher, and the founder and artistic director of Nrithya Nivedhan School of Dance in San Jose, California, USA. She began her journey in Bharatanatyam at the tender age of five, receiving training from 'Saahithya Shiromani' Guru Smt. Prabha Nagarajan in the traditional Pandanallur style. Her solo debut performance, known as Arangetram, took place in 1986 at the Mylapore Fine Arts Academy in Chennai, India. Before dedicating herself fully to dance, Bhuvana worked as a software engineer at Wipro in India and later at IBM in Silicon Valley for over a decade. During her undergraduate years in Chennai, she managed her Guru's institution, Lalitha Kala Nilayam, and trained over 100 dance students when her Guru migrated to the US. She later established Nrithya Nivedhan School of Dance, aiming to propagate Bharatanatyam as a sacred and divine art form. She has been teaching her daughter and disciple, Harshitha Venkatesh, since 2005, and other students in the Bay Area since 2010. Bhuvana is known for her intricate and rhythmic choreographies, having created over 100 traditional Bharatanatyam repertoire items, often integrating Karanas, which she also studied from Guru Smt. A. Vadivu Devi, a disciple of Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam, whom she considers her 'manasika Guru'. She is also currently learning Odissi dance. Awards & Honours: City of San Jose's Commendation award (2017).
