Bijayini Satpathy is a distinguished master, performer, teacher, and scholar of Odissi, an Indian classical dance form. Her career spans over three decades, marked by significant contributions to both performance and pedagogy. Satpathy began her Odissi training at the age of seven in Orissa, India, at the Orissa Dance Academy, founded by the late Guru Gangadhar Pradhan. In 1993, she joined Nrityagram, a renowned dance village in South India, where she spent 25 years as a principal dancer, teacher, researcher, and administrator until 2018. During her tenure at Nrityagram, she collaborated closely with Artistic Director Surupa Sen, achieving global recognition for their distinctive duets. Satpathy also served as Nrityagram's Director of Training and Outreach for 20 years, developing a unique and acclaimed training pedagogy for Odissi. This innovative approach integrates her deep understanding of Yoga, Natyashastra, Kalaripayattu, Western techniques, anatomy, and kinesiology. In 2018, Satpathy embarked on an independent solo career, driven by a desire to explore new choreographic dimensions within the Odissi tradition. Her debut self-choreographed work, "Abhipsaa - A Seeking," premiered in 2021 at Duke Performances, receiving widespread acclaim. She was also an artist-in-residence at the Metropolitan Museum during 2021-2022, which culminated in her evening-length production, "Doha." Satpathy continues to teach and mentor Odissi practitioners globally, hosting annual residential workshops in India since 2023.
