Guru Chenganoor Raman Pillai, also known as Chengannur Raman Pillai (1886–1980), was a celebrated Kathakali artist from Kerala, South India. Born on January 16, 1886, in Pandanad, Chengannur, he became a specialist in the Kathakali southern style known as Kapplingad or Kaplingadan Sampradayam, which emphasizes *abhinaya* (acting). His early training was under esteemed gurus such as Thakazhi Kesava Panikker, Mathur Kunhupilla Panikker, Ambalappuzha Kunhikrishna Panikker, Thakazhi Kochu Neelakandha Pillai, and 'Damayanti' Nanu Pillai. Another Kathakali master, Chennthala Kochupillai Panikker, also contributed to his rise in popularity. Pillai was renowned for his brilliant portrayal of anti-heroic *Kathi* roles on stage, with his masterpieces including characters like Duryodhanan, Ravanan, Keechakan, Jarasandhan, Banan, and Kamsan. He also adeptly performed roles such as Hanuman, Hamsam, and the black-bearded Kaatalan (woodsman). His illustrious career spanned almost 65 years, during which he served as the head of the palace kathakali yogam to the Travancore Maharaja. He was appointed as a palace dancer by the Maharaja of Travancore in 1926 and subsequently became the main guru in the royal Kathakali School, where he championed the importance of all roles, including shorter ones. He reigned on the Kathakali stage for approximately 75 years, performing alongside his teachers, contemporaries, and disciples until the age of 89. Beyond his performances, Guru Chenganoor Raman Pillai was a significant teacher and author. He wrote "Thekkan Chittayilulla Abhyasa Kramangal," a seminal training manual on the southern style of Kathakali. He trained generations of Kathakali artists under the *Gurukula* system. He also entrusted the running of the Kalabharathi Kathakali School at Pakalkuri to his disciples Madavoor Vasudevan Nair and Kurichi Kunjan Panicker. He passed away on November 11, 1980, in Pandanad, Chengannur.
