Pandit Lachhu Maharaj, also known as Chobey Maharaj, was a distinguished Indian classical dancer and choreographer of the Lucknow Gharana of Kathak. Born Baijnath Prasad in Lucknow in 1901, he hailed from a family deeply rooted in Kathak, being the son of Kalka Prasad and nephew of the legendary Bindadin Maharaj. He received extensive training in Kathak for nearly a decade from his uncle Pandit Bindadin Maharaj, and also from his father Kalka Prasad and elder brother Achhan Maharaj. Lachhu Maharaj began his public performances at the tender age of ten and continued to perform for over five decades. He was celebrated for his ability to infuse delicacy, sentimentality, discipline, and sensuality into his performances, captivating audiences with his pure and expressive dance. Beyond the stage, he made significant contributions to the Indian film industry, moving to Mumbai where he served as a dance director and choreographer. His acclaimed choreography graced iconic films such as "Mahal" (1949), "Mughal-e-Azam" (1960), "Chhoti Chhoti Baten" (1965), and "Pakeezah" (1972). He also composed several ballets, including "Goutam Buddha," "Chandravali," and "Bharatiya Kissan". A dedicated educator, Lachhu Maharaj founded his own dance school, "Nutan Nritya Niketan," in Bombay. He was also instrumental in establishing the Kathak Kendra in Lucknow, serving as its founder Director. His profound impact on Kathak was recognized with prestigious accolades, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1957 and the President's Award. He passed away in 1978, leaving behind a rich legacy that continues to inspire generations of Kathak dancers. His notable disciples included his daughter Kaushalya, and the duo Nalini and Kamalini.
