Astad Deboo (1947-2020) was a pioneering Indian contemporary dancer and choreographer, renowned for his unique fusion of Indian classical dance forms with Western modern dance techniques. Born into a Parsi family in Navsari, Gujarat, on July 13, 1947, he spent his early childhood in Kolkata before his family moved to Jamshedpur. Deboo began his dance journey at the age of six, learning Kathak from Guru Indra Kumar Mohanty and Prahlad Das. While pursuing a commerce degree in Mumbai, he was profoundly inspired by a performance of the American Murray Louis Dance Company in 1968. In 1969, Deboo embarked on a transformative journey, hitchhiking through Europe and eventually reaching New York in 1974, where he joined the Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance. Over the next decade, he trained extensively in various Western modern dance techniques, including Martha Graham's and José Limón's, and worked with acclaimed artists like Pina Bausch in Germany and Alison Becker Chase of the Pilobolus Dance Company. Upon his return to India in 1977, he further enriched his classical foundation by studying Kathakali under Guru E. Krishna Panikar in Kerala. This extensive training allowed him to forge a distinctive dance theatre style that seamlessly blended Indian and Western aesthetics. Throughout his illustrious career, Deboo collaborated with diverse artists and groups, including Pink Floyd, the Gundecha Brothers, and Manipuri martial artists and drummers. A significant turning point came in 1986 when Pierre Cardin commissioned him to choreograph for the prima ballerina Maya Plisetskaya of the Bolshoi Theatre Ballet. Beyond his performances, Deboo was deeply committed to social causes, working with marginalized communities. He trained and performed with deaf students from the Clarke School for the Deaf in Chennai and the Action Players in Kolkata, as well as street children from the Salaam Baalak Trust. He established the Astad Deboo Dance Foundation to promote contemporary dance and support these initiatives. Astad Deboo passed away in Mumbai on December 10, 2020, at the age of 73.
