C.K. Balagopalan (1939-2019) was a highly esteemed Indian classical dancer, choreographer, and teacher, celebrated for his profound contributions to both Bharatanatyam and Kathakali. Born on September 4, 1939, in Cheruvathur, Kerala, his early exposure to performing arts came through his father, Rasikasiromani Koman Nair, a local actor known as the "Charlie Chaplin of Malabar". In 1953, at the age of 13, he was selected by Kathakali maestro Chandu Panikkar to join the Kalakshetra Foundation in Chennai, alongside his friend V. P. Dhananjayan. He commenced his formal training in Bharatanatyam and Kathakali under the tutelage of Rukmini Devi Arundale, Kalakshetra's founder, and Chandu Panikkar on October 7, 1953. Balagopalan dedicated over six decades of his life to Kalakshetra, progressing from a student to a repertory artist and eventually a revered teacher. He gained widespread recognition for his iconic portrayal of Hanuman in the institution's dance-drama productions of the Ramayana, a role he performed for 30 years and for which he became synonymous, earning him the moniker 'Hanuman' Balagopalan. His performances were noted for their emotional intensity and technical precision, seamlessly blending the physicality of Kathakali with the grace of Bharatanatyam. Beyond performing, he served on Kalakshetra's governing board and was a dedicated mentor to younger dancers. He also played other significant roles in Kalakshetra productions, including Lakshmana, Bharata, Ravana sanyasi, Krishna, and Vidushaka. He had a brief stint with SIFAS in Singapore in the early 1970s but returned to Kalakshetra. C.K. Balagopalan passed away on August 24, 2019, in Chennai, at the age of 79, due to cardiac arrest. His daughter, Prithvija Balagopalan, continues his legacy as an accomplished Bharatanatyam dancer. Awards & Honours: Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (2002), Natyarangam Award.
