K. Thangappan, widely known as Thangappan Master, was a renowned figure in Indian classical dance, particularly recognized for his expertise in Kathakali and his significant contributions as a dance choreographer in the Indian film industry. He received his foundational training in Kathakali under the tutelage of Guru Gopinath, a celebrated exponent who played a pivotal role in popularizing Kathakali and developing the 'Kerala Natanam' style. Thangappan also honed his skills under Jaishankar Master, a prominent choreographer known for his work in films like 'Chandralekha'. Thangappan Master's career saw him become a highly respected dance choreographer in the Indian film industry, where he was instrumental in shaping the dance sequences of numerous productions. His teaching legacy is notably highlighted by his role as the Kathakali guru to the acclaimed actor Kamal Haasan. Kamal Haasan apprenticed under Thangappan as a dance assistant, and Thangappan's rigorous training in the Kathakali style profoundly influenced Haasan's masculine dance performances in films. Thangappan Master's influence extended beyond traditional classical dance, as he adapted his knowledge to the demands of cinema, making him a significant bridge between classical art forms and popular entertainment.
