🪔 About

Douglas M. Knight Jr. is an American scholar and master mridangist, a percussionist in Carnatic music, deeply connected to the world of Indian classical dance, particularly Bharatanatyam. He received his training in mridangam from the esteemed T. Ranganathan. Knight's profound involvement in the art form is further highlighted by his marriage to Lakshmi Knight, the daughter of the legendary Bharatanatyam dancer T. Balasaraswati. He became Balasaraswati's consort in 1936. This familial connection placed him at the heart of one of India's most distinguished dance lineages. As a scholar, Douglas Knight authored the significant biography "Balasaraswati: Her Art and Life," which provides an in-depth account of his mother-in-law's life and artistic contributions. This book, published around 2010, has been reviewed and acknowledged as an extremely well-written account that explains even esoteric aspects of Bharatanatyam. He has also discussed his book and Balasaraswati's work at institutions like the Asia Society. Beyond his scholarly work, Knight is an active accompanist. He has performed on mridangam for his son, Aniruddha Knight, who is a Bharatanatyam dancer carrying forward the family's hereditary style. For instance, in 2010, he accompanied Aniruddha Knight at Bates College for a South Indian dance performance. His musical contributions are noted for being tasteful and receptive, enhancing the dance recitals. Douglas Knight was also associated with Wesleyan University, where T. Balasaraswati and her brothers taught since 1962, further solidifying his ties to the academic and performance aspects of Indian classical arts in the United States. His role as a musician, scholar, and a key figure within the Balasaraswati family lineage makes him a notable personality in the realm of Indian classical dance and music.
