Dr. Nirmala John is an accomplished Bharatanatyam teacher, choreographer, and pioneer who has significantly contributed to the art form in Sri Lanka and gained international recognition. She received her Post Diploma Certificate from Bharatakalanjali in India, an institution founded by The Dhananjayans in Chennai, where she was privileged to receive it from the philosopher G.V. Iyer. Her academic qualifications include a B.F.A and M.F.A from Bharathidasan University, India, and a Ph.D from the University of the Visual & Performing Arts, Sri Lanka, which she obtained in 2022. Her doctoral thesis focused on the "Appropriation of Bharatanatyam dance drama into the Sri Lanka Cultural Milieu." Dr. John founded the Nirmalanjali Academy of Bharathanatyam in Colombo, Sri Lanka, in 1986, an institution dedicated to teaching Bharatanatyam. The academy has since celebrated its Silver Jubilee and has been responsible for numerous Arangetrams and performances on stage and television. She has also established a branch of Nirmalanjali in Brisbane, Australia, with her daughter. As a performer, Dr. Nirmala John has showcased her solo performances globally in countries such as the USA (Illinois, New Haven, Florida, Yale, Connecticut), Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur), Norway (Oslo), Thailand (Bangkok), India (Mylapore, Bangalore, Chidambaram), and Singapore. She is known for her pioneering efforts in blending Bharatanatyam with diverse religions, literature, music, and languages, while steadfastly maintaining its traditional purity and aesthetic values. Her major dance productions include 'Navarasa Virunthu', 'Nithiya Sumangali', 'Sivakamiyin Sabatham', and 'Sri Rama Pattabishekam'. Recognized for her contributions, Dr. Nirmala John has been honored with several prestigious titles and awards, including the Bunka Award of Japan and the title 'Natyapoorna' from Bharatakalanjali, Chennai. She also holds titles such as 'Kalai Chudar', 'Natya Kala Jothi', 'Nadana Ilavarasi'/'Natya Elavarasi', 'Natya Kala Mani', and 'Kalai Chelvi'. She became a Member Dancer/Choreographer of the Arts Council of Sri Lanka in January 2020.
