🪔 About
Dr. Vedantam Venkata Naga Chalapathi Rao is a distinguished figure in the realm of Kuchipudi, an Indian classical dance form, hailing from the illustrious Vedantam family of Kuchipudi village, known for its rich 'Natya Parampara' or dance inheritance. He was initiated into dance at the tender age of five by his father, Vedantam Rattayya Sarma (also known as Vedantam Rataiah Sarma), a renowned teacher-dancer celebrated for his formidable portrayals in traditional Kuchipudi Yakshaganas. His early training was further enriched under the guidance of his paternal uncle, Vedantam Radheshyam. Later, he received advanced training from the legendary guru Vempati Chinna Satyam in Chennai. Chalapathi Rao also honed his skills in the quintessential female impersonation (Stri Vesham) under his father's tutelage, performing his first public Sathyabhama in Bhama Kalapam in 1996. A master of both female and male roles, Dr. Chalapathi Rao is particularly noted for his 'roopanuroopa prakriya,' a unique ability to perform both a female and a male character on the same stage in a single program, a practice that became a regular feature of his performances from 1999. His powerful portrayals include 'Hiranyakashipa' in Bhakta Prahalada ballet and 'Bali Chakravarthy' in Ksheerasagara Madanam. He holds a Post Graduate degree in dance from Potti Sriramulu Telugu University and is currently pursuing his PhD from the same institution, bringing a strong academic foundation to his artistic practice. Dr. Vedantam Chalapathi Rao has performed extensively at prestigious dance festivals across India and internationally, including the Khajuraho Dance Festival and Ananya Dance Festival. He has toured the United States as part of Vempati Chinna Satyam's troupe, performing in over 70 shows, and has also conducted solo performances and workshops there. His international engagements also include tours to China and Japan as a nattuvannar under the ICCR. For his significant contributions to Kuchipudi, he was honored with the Sangeet Natak Akademi's "Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar" in 2006, becoming the first Kuchipudi artist to receive this prestigious award. Beyond performing, Dr. Chalapathi Rao is a dedicated educator. He serves as a lecturer in the Siddhendra College of Dance at Kuchipudi and founded 'Kuchipudi Kalaniketan' to train young dancers. He is also the Secretary and a founder of the Kuchipudi Heritage Arts Society (KHAS), an organization committed to preserving and promoting the purity of the Kuchipudi tradition. Dr. Kiran Vedantam is a documented student who continued her advanced study under his mentorship. In December 2024, he conceptualized the Kuchipudi Natyapathaka Swarnotsavulu to commemorate 50 years of the Kuchipudi flag. Awards & Honours: Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar (2006).
