Kanchivaram Ellappa Pillai was a distinguished Nattuvanar and a significant figure in Bharatanatyam, particularly known for his contributions to the Tanjore Bani. Born into a family of musicians in Kanchivaram, his artistic lineage traced back to Ashwadhati Pacchamuthu Mudaliar. Ellappa Pillai began his musical training at the age of five under his grandfather, Parasuram Mudaliar, a renowned vocalist. At nine, he commenced his dance and nattuvangam studies with his maternal uncle, Tiruvengada Mudaliar, a descendant of Ashwadhati Pacchamuthu Mudaliar. By the age of seventeen, he was already conducting dance recitals. Ellappa Pillai further honed his skills by associating with Kandappa, a descendant of the famous Tanjore Quartet, and absorbed the Kandappan style of the Tanjore School. He also studied abhinaya under the acclaimed Chinnayya Naidu. Ellappa Pillai's teaching emphasized the precision of basic stances, rhythmic tempo, and the subtleties of abhinaya, contributing to what became known as the Kanchipuram style (bani), which notably incorporated sculptural poses. He was a versatile artist, excelling as a singer, composer, and mridangam player. For over a decade, he conducted the recitals of the legendary dancer Balasaraswati. His home in Mambalam, Madras (now Chennai), became a hub for dance education, attracting numerous students, including many from France, which led to his international recognition. He was a perfectionist who insisted his students understand Tamil and the lyrics of the songs they performed, and he taught crisp and short jathi korvais. Among his notable disciples were M.D. Venkatesh, Lakshmi Vishwanathan, and Udupi Laxminarayana, who continued to propagate his distinctive Tanjore Bani. Ellappa Pillai's legacy is marked by his dedication to the purity and aesthetic clarity of Bharatanatyam.
