V.P. Dhananjayan, born on April 30, 1939, in Payyanur, Kerala, and Shanta Dhananjayan, born on August 12, 1943, in Chittur, Palghat, are celebrated figures in Indian classical dance, collectively known as The Dhananjayans. V.P. Dhananjayan joined Kalakshetra in 1953, where he received training in both Kathakali and Bharatanatyam under Guru T.K. Chandu Panikkar. He earned a diploma and postgraduate diploma in Kathakali with distinction and served as a leading male dancer at Kalakshetra under Rukmini Devi until 1968, notably becoming synonymous with the character of Sri Rama in the Ramayana series. Shanta Dhananjayan, a child prodigy, joined Kalakshetra in 1952. Under Rukmini Devi's mentorship and Guru Chandu Panickar's guidance, she excelled in Bharatanatyam and Carnatic music, also learning Kathakali, and obtained a postgraduate diploma with distinction in Bharatanatyam. She was the prima-dona of Kalakshetra for nearly 15 years, renowned for her portrayals of Radha in Gita Govindam and Sita in the Ramayana series. The couple married in 1966. In 1968, they co-founded Bharata Kalanjali in Chennai, which has since become one of India's most respected institutions for Bharatanatyam. The Dhananjayans are known for their adherence to the strict classicism of the Kalakshetra style while also exploring new themes and movements without compromising tradition. Through Bharata Kalanjali, they have shaped generations of artists, providing rigorous training that nurtures students into well-rounded individuals prepared for both the stage and life. Their unwavering dedication to the art form and commitment to Bhaarateeya Samskriti values have established them as role models for aspiring dancers globally.
