Guru Gangadhar Pradhan (1948-2010) was a highly esteemed Indian classical dancer, choreographer, and teacher of Odissi, recognized as a leading figure of the second generation of the dance form. Born on July 10, 1948, in Parikul village, Puri district, Odisha, India, he began his dance journey at the tender age of six as a Gotipua dancer at the Balunkeswar temple in Dhimirisena village. His early training in Gotipua was under gurus like Banchinidhi Pradhan, Chandrasekhar Patnaik, and Mahadev Raut. He later enrolled in the Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya in Bhubaneswar, where he received comprehensive Odissi training from eminent gurus such as Adiguru Pankaj Charan Das, Guru Deba Prasad Das, Dr. Minati Mishra, and Dhirendranath Patnaik. He further honed his skills through intensive advanced training under the legendary Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra. Pradhan was also a maestro of the mardala, receiving intensive training from Banamali Maharana and Singhari Shyam Sundar Kar. Throughout his illustrious career, Guru Gangadhar Pradhan was known for his exceptional performances and choreographies, including masterpieces like "Konark Kanti," "Shiva Panchaka," and various Ashtapadis from "Geeta Govinda." He frequently accompanied the renowned dancer Sanjukta Panigrahi as a co-dancer and percussionist. A visionary institution builder, he founded Natya Loka in Bhubaneswar in 1973, which was later renamed the Orissa Dance Academy (ODA). In 1986, he established the Konark Natya Mandap in Konark, transforming a barren land into a vibrant center for art and culture.
