Gour Prasad Ghose (1929-1994), initially known as Rai Gour, was a highly influential Indian film personality, renowned as a veteran actor, director, and producer in the Odia film industry. Born into an affluent Bengali family that had migrated to Odisha from Bardhaman, he began his artistic journey as a stage artiste during his college years at Ravenshaw College in Cuttack. He received early guidance from Kabichandra Kalicharan Patnaik at “Orissa Theatres” and further honed his craft with five years of training at Prithvi Theatres in Bombay (now Mumbai). His directorial skills were shaped by luminaries such as Gyan Mukherjee, Prithviraj Kapoor, and Ramchandra Thakur. Ghose made his cinematic debut as an actor in 1949 with “Sri Jagannath”. A pivotal moment in his career came in 1956 when he ventured into production with the film “Bhai Bhai” under his banner, Chitram. He is widely regarded as the first romantic actor and a pioneer who introduced proactive changes, paving the way for future generations of Odia cinema. Throughout his prolific career, he produced and directed numerous successful and award-winning films, including “Maa” (1959), “Laxmi” (1962), “Kaa” (1965), “Stree” (1968), and “Sansaar” (1971). After a successful run in cinema, Ghose expanded his repertoire into television, producing and directing Odia telefilms like “Samadhan” and “Hawker”. In 1985, he achieved a significant milestone by presenting “Prashna,” the first Hindi telefilm from Odisha to be aired on the National Network. Collaborating closely with his wife, Parbati Ghose, he garnered both critical acclaim and commercial success. He was also instrumental in nurturing new talent, introducing many stage and radio artistes into the film industry.
