Guru Kartik Ram was a towering figure in Indian classical dance, particularly renowned as a titan of the Raigarh Gharana of Kathak. Born in 1910 in Bhanwarmal village, Bilaspur district (now Chhattisgarh), his journey began as a rural folk artist, performing in his uncle Makhanlal's 'Gammat Nacha Parti'. His exceptional talent was discovered by Raja Chakradhar Singh of Raigarh at a Ganesh fair, who subsequently brought him to his court for formal training in Kathak. Kartik Ram received his initial training from Pt. Shivnarayan. He further honed his skills under several legendary gurus, including Pt. Jailal, Shambhu Maharaj, Lachhu Maharaj, Achhan Maharaj, Mohanlal, and Narayan Prasad. He was particularly noted for learning 'laziness' (a stylistic element) from Achhan Maharaj, speed from Shambhu Maharaj, and sentiment (Abhinaya) from Lachhu Maharaj. Beyond dance, he also pursued higher education in tabla from Nathu Khan and received training in Khyal, Thumri, Tappa, and Ghazal from Haji Mohammed. Alongside Pt. Kalyan Das, Kartik Ram became one of the "two pillars" of the Raigarh style, blending athletic vigor with rhythmic complexity. He was celebrated for his extraordinary command over Layakari (rhythmic play) and his ability to execute incredibly fast, crisp footwork without losing clarity. His versatility extended to mastering both the Tandava (vigorous) and Abhinaya (expressive storytelling) aspects of dance, translating poetic nuances of Brij Bhasha into subtle and impactful movements. Kartik Ram gained national fame through performances at various music conferences, notably the Allahabad Music Conference. After the decline of princely states, he dedicated his life to preserving the Raigarh Gharana, which he helped establish as a distinct and respected branch of Kathak. He served as a professor at the Indira Kala Sangit Vishwavidyalaya in Khairagarh and also taught at the Chakradhar Nritya Kendra in Bhopal, mentoring a new generation of dancers and ensuring the documentation and performance of Raigarh's unique compositions and 'bols'.
