Dr. Guruvayur Usha Dorai is a prominent figure in Indian classical dance, particularly Bharatanatyam, and the visionary founder and principal of Laasya Arts Academy. Based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, her academy specializes in Sangeetham, Bharatanatyam, Veena, and Nattuvangam, reflecting her dedication to preserving and promoting these traditional Indian art forms. Prior to establishing Laasya Arts Academy, Dr. Dorai served as a Bharatanatyam teacher at the esteemed Temple of Fine Arts in Kuala Lumpur. Her commitment to the arts is evident in her extensive work, which includes conducting 51 dance and music arrangements and producing numerous dance productions that have garnered accolades both in Malaysia and internationally. Dr. Dorai's teaching philosophy emphasizes creating an inspiring, motivating, and enlightening environment for her students, enabling even those facing challenges to learn the art form with ease. Under her guidance, Laasya Arts Academy has staged performances in six cities in India for Cultural Relations, receiving standing ovations, including at the International Ramayana Festival. The academy's talented young students have also performed at significant events in India, such as the Indo Music Festival, Eesha Sarvesha 2.0 in Puducherry, and Eesha Sarvesha 3.0 and Aaradhana in Chennai, often in collaboration with organizations like the Guruvayur Dorai Trust and Sangamam Global Academy. These initiatives aim to expose Malaysian students to the depth and authenticity of classical Indian performance art. Her contributions to Indian classical dance and social service have been widely recognized. In January 2023, Dr. Guruvayur Usha Dorai received an Honorary Doctorate award and title from the Hindustan Art & Music Society. She was also honored with the Lifetime Arts Achievement Award by the Malaysia International Carnatic Music Festival in 2021. Dr. Dorai's influence extends to choreography, as seen in a recent charity performance in June 2026, where she guided students P. Gowri and Sathia in five Bharatanatyam pieces.
