Haricharan Bhuyan Borbayan, born on December 1, 1963, in Dhunaguri, Lakhimpur, Assam, India, is a distinguished figure in Indian classical dance, primarily recognized for his profound contributions to Sattriya dance. He dedicated his life as a Vaisnavite devotee at the Natun Kamalabari Sattra in Majuli, a significant monastic institution in Assam. His early training in Sattriya dance and music was under the tutelage of esteemed gurus including Debananda Borbayan, Thageswar Bayan, Santiram Gayan, Moniram Pathok, and Nagen Gayan. As an outstanding teacher and performer, Borbayan has spent many years teaching and directing the traditional performances of the Sattra, encompassing both Nritya (dance) and Gayan Bayan (music). He has been instrumental in training a new generation of students at various institutions and also serves as a visiting lecturer at Dibrugarh University. His expertise has led him to participate in numerous prestigious festivals both within India and internationally. He has also conducted workshops on Sattriya dance, Ojapali, and Khol playing, including one supported by the Sangeet Natak Akademi in 2018. For his dedication and significant contributions to the art form, Haricharan Bhuyan Borbayan was honored with the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (Akademi Puraskar) in 2016 for Sattriya dance, the highest Indian recognition in performing arts. He has also received various other awards and titles from cultural organizations. His teaching methodology and the philosophy of the Uttar Kamalabari Satra tradition have influenced many, including the founders of the Philadelphia-based Sattriya Dance Company.
