Kalamandalam Hariharan, born in 1969, is a distinguished Mizhavu artist deeply rooted in the Koodiyattam tradition of Kerala, India. His full name, Hariharan A N, reflects his father's name, Alikkal Narayana Guptan. Hariharan embarked on his artistic journey at the age of 16, joining the prestigious Kerala Kalamandalam to specialize in Mizhavu drumming, a pivotal percussion instrument in Koodiyattam performances. He completed a rigorous four-year diploma followed by two years of advanced training, supported by a scholarship from the Government of India. His formative training was guided by esteemed gurus such as Kalamandalam Eshwaran Unni and V.K.K. Hariharan. His debut performance took place a year after commencing his studies at Kalamandalam, at the Aiyyappankavu in Cheruplassery. Since 1995, Hariharan has been an integral part of the Ammannur Chachu Chakyar Smaraka Gurukulam, serving as a Mizhavu artiste and contributing significantly to the preservation and propagation of Koodiyattam. His career highlights include extensive national and international tours with the Gurukulam troupe, showcasing the ancient Sanskrit theatre form to diverse audiences. He has participated in prominent national theatre festivals, including those held in Khajuraho and the Kutiyattam festival organized by the Kendra Sangeet Nataka Academy. Hariharan has collaborated on numerous significant productions, working alongside renowned artists and contributing to new works by Guru Ammannur Madhava Chakyar, G. Venu's 'Sakuntalam' and 'Vikramorvasheeyam', Ammannur Kuttan Chakyar's 'Mayashiras', and Margi Sathy's 'SreeRamacharitham Nangiarkoothu' and 'Kannakicharitham Nangiarkoothu'. Notably, he also performed as a policeman in G. Venu's 'Sakuntalam'. His artistry extends to accompanying other performers, as seen when he provided Mizhavu accompaniment for Tomoe Tara Irino's Bamboo Orchestra. Residing in Palakkad District, Trichur, Kerala, Hariharan continues to be a vital force in the Koodiyattam community, upholding its rich heritage through his percussive mastery and dedication.
