Hema Rajagopalan is a globally renowned Bharatanatyam dancer, teacher, and choreographer, originally from Chennai, India. She began her dance journey in 1956 at the age of six, studying under the devadasi guru Swarna Saraswathy. Demonstrating exceptional talent, she performed her first arangetram after just six months of training in 1956. Rajagopalan further honed her skills under eminent Bharatanatyam figures including Padmasri K.N. Dandayudapani Pillai and his brothers K.N. Pakkirswami Pillai and K.N. Dakshinamoorthy Pillai. She later deepened her study of abhinaya (histrionic expression) under Padma Bhushan Smt. Kalanidhi Narayanan in the early 1980s. In 1974, Rajagopalan relocated to Chicago, Illinois, and in 1975, she founded the Natya Dance Theatre. As its Artistic Director, she has been instrumental in preserving and promoting Bharatanatyam in the United States, while also evolving the art form through dynamic and versatile choreography that appeals to diverse audiences. She performed as a soloist for three decades at prestigious venues worldwide, including the Edinburgh Festival and the Avignon Festival. Rajagopalan has curated significant dance conferences, such as "In the Diaspora: Spiritual, Classical, Contemporary" in 2001, the first U.S. Bharatanatyam dance conference, and "Dance India" in 2006. Her collaborative works include projects with Yo-Yo Ma, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and Chitravina Ravikiran. Under her leadership, Natya Dance Theatre has been recognized as one of Chicago's Cultural Treasures.
