Ishwari Prasad, a Misra Brahmin from the Handia tehsil of Allahabad (now Prayagraj) in Uttar Pradesh, is widely recognized as the earliest known Kathak Guru and the founder of the Lucknow Gharana of Kathak. According to legend, Lord Krishna appeared to him in a dream, instructing him to re-establish and develop dance as a form of worship. He dedicated his life to this divine instruction, teaching the Kathak dance form to his three sons: Adguji, Khadguji, and Tularamji. It is said that he continued to teach until he was 100 years old. The style of Kathak he introduced to the Lucknow Gharana was known as 'Natwari Nritya'. His descendants, who later became known as the Maharaj family of dancers, played a crucial role in establishing and carrying forward the legacy of the Lucknow Gharana, which is considered by some to be the oldest Kathak gharana.
