Jahan Ara, also known as Jahanara Akhlaq, was a celebrated Kathak dancer from Lahore, Pakistan, who, in her brief life, made a significant mark in the dance world. Born with an artistic flair, she was the daughter of renowned painter, sculptor, and architect Zahoor-ul-Akhlaq and ceramist Sheherezade Alam. Jahan Ara dedicated her life to dance, infusing a new spirit into the art of Kathak. She received her training under notable gurus such as Naheed Siddiqui and Maharaj Kathak. Her career began with her first solo performance in Lahore in 1993. In 1994, she moved to Canada, where her skills were equally appreciated. She received the Chalmers Award in 1998, a testament to her talent and dedication. That same year, she also received a grant from the Canadian Council, enabling her to study at the Chandralekha Dance Company in Chennai, India, although she left after three months. Jahan Ara tragically passed away at the age of 24 on January 18, 1999, along with her father, in their family home in Lahore. She is remembered for her exquisite dance style and captivating performances, inspiring many contemporary dancers. Awards & Honours: Chalmers Award (1998).
