🪔 About

Jalsa Chandra is a prominent Indian classical dancer and guru, primarily known for her contributions to Bharatanatyam, though she is also trained in Kathak. Her formal training in Bharatanatyam began at the tender age of eight under Smt. Girija Balgopal, and she later honed her skills under the tutelage of Guru Smt. Thankamani Kutty. Complementing her dance education, Chandra also received training in Carnatic Vocal and Mridangam, which further enriched her understanding of Bharatanatyam. Beyond Bharatanatyam, she expanded her expertise to Kathak, learning from Kanan Sen and currently refining her skills with Pt. Rajendra Gangani. Academically, Jalsa Chandra holds a Master's degree in English and an Honours degree in Zoology. With a career spanning over 25 years, Jalsa Chandra has established herself as a leading Bharatanatyam exponent in Kolkata, mesmerizing audiences at numerous prestigious national and international festivals, including the Dover Lane Dance Festival, Jaidev Festival, Young Talent Festival, EZCC Uday Shankar Festival in India, and the Multicultural Festival in Australia. In 2000, she founded "Nritya Kalangan," a dance institution in Kolkata dedicated to imparting knowledge of Indian classical dance forms, primarily Bharatanatyam and Kathak. Under her guidance, senior students at Nritya Kalangan evolve into assistant teachers, perpetuating her teaching legacy. Her students also form a professional performing troupe, showcasing her choreographies at various events, such as the biennial 'Naadanta' festival organized by Chandra herself. Jalsa Chandra is also actively involved in social causes, associating with the orphanage "Refuge" and utilizing funds raised from her performances to support noble initiatives, reflecting her passion as an animal lover. She is also an anchor and has a flair for recitation and swimming.
