🪔 About
Jatin Goswami, born on August 2, 1933, in Adhar Sattra, a village near Dergaon in Assam, India, is a revered figure and leading exponent of Sattriya dance. His initial cultural education began at home under the guidance of his father, Dharanidhar Dev Goswami, a devoted practitioner of Sattriya dance and music. He received rigorous training from eminent gurus including Maniram Dutta Muktiar, Roseswar Saikia Bayan (also known as Raseswar Saikia Barbayan), Gopiram Bayan, Babula Bayan, and Bishnu Prasad Rabha. Goswami also broadened his artistic foundation by training in Kathak under Ganesh Hiralal and Manipuri dance from Atomba Singh. In 1953, he founded Alok Shilpi Sangha in Dergaon, a dedicated center for dance and music. Building on this, he co-established Pragjyoti Kala Parishad in 1962 alongside Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha and Roxeswar Saikia Barbayan, aiming to promote Sattriya on a broader scale. Goswami played a pivotal role in elevating Sattriya from a monastic tradition to a recognized classical art form, notably contributing to its formal recognition by the Sangeet Natak Akademi in 2000. He is credited with the first telecast of Sattriya dance on Delhi Doordarshan in 1960 and the premiere of Ankia Naat "Rukmini Haran" on a contemporary stage in 1963. As the founder director of Sattriya Akademi in Guwahati, he continues to mentor the next generation. He has authored several books on Sattriya, including "Maati Akhora" and "Nrittyar Prathamik Hasta Parichay." His lifelong dedication has earned him numerous accolades, solidifying his legacy as a cultural preservationist and innovator.
